World Courier Sponsors TARA Oceans’ Environmental Research

In September 2009, the TARA Oceans expedition embarked on an ambitious three-year mission of discovery aimed at deepening our knowledge of marine biodiversity, studying the impact of climate change on our oceans and raising the environmental awareness of the public.

Throughout this expedition, an international team of oceanographers, ecologists, biologists and physicists will undertake continuous exploration of the world’s oceans and seas using, for the first time, identical collection and observation methods. As the voyage proceeds, precious temperature-controlled sea specimens will be picked up by World Courier in some of the world’s most remote ports-of-call and transported to labs in Europe and the U.S. for further analysis.

TARA departed Lorient (France) in September 2009. This leg, culminating in Cape Town (South Africa) in July 2010, has taken TARA and her crew though the Mediterranean, Suez Canal, Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman, Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean. Since September 2010, Tara has successfully navigated the Atlantic, rounding Cape Horn (the southern-most tip of South America) and sailing northward to the Galapagos Islands. The expedition will continue across the Pacific where it is scheduled to conclude in 2012.
